The canal gardens, Roundhay

Strollers Group

The Strollers Group meets every third Wednesday of the month. These walks are 2½ to 4 miles. We try to visit a place of interest en route and usually manage to find a tea shop. Places have included Valley Gardens at Harrogate, Roundhay Park, Ripley, and Saltaire/Shipley Glen. We are planning some canal and riverside walks, Ripon parks, York river walk. Our enjoyment is from the surroundings and the company.

Next walk, Wednesday 17 August

Pontefract Castle

photoBy request after a failed attempt to get into the castle due to high winds in February – we try again.

A stroll up from the station to learn about the fascinating history of this Royal Castle – where kings of Northumberland once held court and an English king was imprisoned and left to die.

Since receiving a large grant from the Lottery Fund, the walls have been strengthened and the Sally Port (the escape tunnel) has been opened up. The new café has hopefully now re-opened and the plans for future development may be back on show in the visitors’ centre.

We then walk up into the historic centre of the town to see more of its historic past. Distance only about 2 miles in total.

Meet outside Boots the chemist in the train station at 10.35 for the 10.58 train to Pontefract Monkhill, arriving 11.38. Buy an off peak return ticket. We can always come back by bus from the town centre if we have to – hedging our bets on this one. The train should be platform 17A.

Wear sensible shoes as it is an uphill walk to the castle on pavements and then paths and grass inside the castle. Take a packed lunch or buy lunch at the café. No need to book – just turn up at the station.
